The 1961-62 Impala Super Sport was the new benchmark Chevrolet introduced to raise the bar on the best-selling passenger car. While Chevrolet Introduced the Impala name plate in 1958, they quickly transitioned the Impala to the flag ship of the Chevrolet line. By 1961 they were looking how to deepen the line and make it even more flashy. Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport package on the 2 door hardtop and convertible, which featured suspension upgrades, with heavy duty shocks and springs, and spinner hubcaps. The "SS" emblems on the rear quarters and decklid were visual cues that these cars were heavily optioned. Buyers had to opt for one of the larger V8 motors to order a SS, most buyers checked the box for the 348ci V8, or the new for ’61 409ci V8. In 1962 the SS still included power brakes and a 7k tach, but you could now get a 6 Cylinder SS. Most buyers opted for the 409, with up to 409 horsepower.
