Gilbern GT (1959 to 1967)

The Gilbern GT was the model that launched the marque, produced from 1959 to 1967 as a compact, high-performance 2+2 coupé. Because it was hand-built in limited numbers, engine options were diverse and followed the evolution of British sports car power; early versions featured the 948cc BMC A-Series (often with a Shorrock supercharger) or the 1098cc Coventry Climax, while later models standardized on the 1.6L and 1.8L BMC B-Series engines from the MGA and MGB. Key features included a lightweight fiberglass body bonded to a robust square-section steel spaceframe, which utilized Austin A35 front suspension and a coil-sprung live rear axle with trailing arms. As the first production car built in Wales, the GT established Gilbern’s reputation for combining the tax advantages of a "kit" car with the fit and finish of a luxury grand tourer, with roughly 202 units produced before it was phased out.
