The second generation of the Holden Commodore lasted from 1988 to 1997. Model variants include the VN, VP, VR, and VS. The first Commodore based "Utes" were introduced with the VN series. These were not the first Australian utility vehicles of this type, even from Holden, but these continued the popular body style beloved by Australians. The Utes were given designations VG during this generation. Most second generation Commodores were equipped with a Buick-designed V6, inline four or an optional V8. The third generation of the Commodore began in 1997 and last until 2007.
