Iso was an Italian manufacturer of cars and motorcycles that was established in 1953. The company had roots in various industries before being re-established in 1953 in order to signify its new focus on transportation. Founded by Renzo Rivolta, Iso created one of the most iconic microcars during its early years, the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/isetta/">Isetta</a>. These cars would sell around the world, and were licenced by a variety of manufacturers. In 1962, Iso introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/rivolta/">Rivolta</a>, their first grand tourer. The Rivolta signaled Iso&#39;s shift into more luxurious performance cars, and the company would later introduce models like the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/">Grifo</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/fidia/">Fidia</a>, and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/lele/">Lele</a>. Iso continued to operate until 1974, when the company went bankrupt.

The Iso Grifo AC/3 was a series of competition cars introduced for 1965. The AC/3 was created by famed engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, the man behind the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/ferrari/250/gto/">Ferrari 250 GTO</a>, and was his vision for the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/">Iso Grifo</a>. These competition cars were based on the same platform as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/series-i/">Series I</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/series-ii/">Series II</a> production cars, but were vastly modified and featured drastically different styling. Alongside its alloy body, the AC/3&#39;s 5.4L <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a>-sourced V8 engine was moved back by almost two inches, improving its center of gravity and handling. Unfortunately, Bizzarrini and Iso differed in how they felt the Grifo should continue, leading the production Grifo and the A3/C being built in separate factories, before the partnership dissolved entirely with only 22 examples of the A3/C produced. Often referred to as the &quot;improved GTO&quot; by Bizzarrini himself, these rare Italian performance machines are amongst the most sought out by collectors.

Iso Grifo - Series I

Introduced in 1965, the Series I was the first generation of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/">Iso Grifo</a>. Derived from the A3/L prototype, the Grifo featured a sleek coupe body styled by famed designer Giorgetto Guigiaro. These grand tourers combined Italian luxury and American brawn, with power coming from a selection of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/chevrolet/corvette">Chevrolet Corvette</a> engines. The &#39;GL&#39; which was the standard model, was powered by a 5.4L &#39;327&#39; V8 engine, while a later performance variant, the 7 Litri, featured a 7.0L &#39;427&#39; V8 powerplant. While the vast majority of Series I Grifos were coupes, 13 targa-top versions were built. Production of the Series I lasted until 1970, when the updated <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/iso/grifo/series-ii/">Iso Grifo Series II</a> was unveiled. In total, 330 Series I cars were produced.

The Series II was largely similar to the previous generation, with the most noticeable change being the partially covered front headlights. Initially, these cars were powered by Chevrolet-sourced V8 engines, but in 1972, disagreements with General Motors lead to the use of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/ford/">Ford</a>-sourced V8 engines until the end of production in 1974.
