The fourth generation of Jaguar XJ was introduced in 1988. Known as the XJ40, the fourth generation XJ featured an all new platform fitted with Jaguar's independent rear suspension as well as more angular styling. The XJ40 was available with a range of inline six engines as well as a V12 option. Notable XJ40 variants include the XJR, Vanden Plas, and XJ12. The XJ40 was in production until 1994 when it was replaced by the Jaguar XJ300.
