The first open top variant of the Murciélago, the Murciélago Roadster was introduced in 2004. The Roadster was produced until 2006 when it was replaced by the LP640 Roadster. Largely similar to the coupe upon which it was based, the Roadster featured a few variations such as a different engine cover, as well as different interior materials. Due to the nature of the cloth roof and the raw power of the car, Lamborghini recommended not using the roof over 100mph. Well-refined, and highly capable, the Murciélago Roadster was well equipped to continue the legacy of open topped Lamborghinis. Cars in this market were equipped with a 6-speed "E-Gear" automated manual transmission.
