Mercedes-Benz 180D - W120 (1953 to 1962)

The Mercedes-Benz 180D was the diesel powered variant of the W120. Introduced in 1953, the 180D offered from the factory in a four door sedan body style, but coachbuilt station wagons built by Binz & Co. were sold at Mercedes dealerships. Over the course of production the 180D saw three evolutions, the 180D (1953-1959), 180Db (1959-1961), and 180Dc (1961-1962). These evolutions were mainly based on the engines, but there were minor interior and exterior changes such as a wider grill and larger taillights. The 180D was launched with Mercedes' OM636 1.8L inline four diesel engine, this 40hp engine was updated for the 180Db, with power increasing to 43hp. The 180Dc saw the introduction of the new OM621 engine, which was a 1.9L diesel inline four that generated 48hp. Production of the W120 Mercedes-Benz 180D lasted until 1961, with a total of 152,983 examples built.
