The first generation after the model designation change was known as the Mercedes-Benz GLE W166 and was introduced for the 2015 model year. The W166 GLE, was equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and air suspension and powered by a range of inline four, inline five, V6 and V8 engines, with inline five and V8 diesel options. Variants offered include the GLE 350, GLE 350 4MATIC, GLE 400 4MATIC, GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC, AMG GLE 43 4MATIC, GLE 63 AMG 4MATIC, GLE 63 S AMG 4MATIC and the GLE 300d 4MATIC. The GLE 500e is the first plug-in hybrid in this model range, combining a 333 hp V6 engine with a 116 hp electric motor. The first 19 units were delivered in the American market in June 2016. Along came the C292 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe offering  a second body style option with the same engine variations. Produced until 2019, the W166 GLE was replaced by the W167 Mercedes-Benz GLE.
