Mini

Mini is a British automotive manufacturer created by the British Motor Corporation (later British Leyland). While originally used as the name of model of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/">Austin</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/morris/">Morris</a> cars, Mini became its own make in 1969. In 1980 the cars returned to the Austin brand, before being a product of Rover until 2001. While the corporate and brand history of the Mini may be slightly complicated, the car is not. To any motoring enthusiast, the Mini name brings to mind the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/classic-mini/">Classic Mini</a>, the model that launched the name and became a cultural icon. For decades the classic Mini helped endear the little cars to the world before production finally ended with a few 2001 examples. In 1994, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/">BMW</a> acquired Rover and Mini, and launched new chapter of Mini. This new iteration of Mini was launched with the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/">Modern Mini</a>, a series of compact cars channeling the spirit and fun of the original, while bringing the model into the modern era.

In 2001, after acquiring the rights to the Mini brand, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/bmw/">BMW</a> introduced the modern Mini, a series of compact cars inspired by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/classic-mini/">Classic Mini</a>. Also known as the Mini Cooper, this new series of cars features styling derived from the original Mini, but with modern technology and safety. The Mini Cooper has been largely offered as a hardtop hatchback or convertible, yet variants such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/coupe/">Mini Coupe</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/roadster/">Mini Roadster</a> have also been available during production. Performance versions of the Mini Cooper, such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/1st-gen/cooper-s-1st-gen/">Cooper S</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/1st-gen/john-cooper-works-gp-1st-gen/">John Cooper Works GP</a>, are among the most notable variants. The second generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/">Mini Cooper</a> was introduced for the 2007 model year. While the second generation <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/hardtop-2nd-gen/">Hardtop</a> was availabe in 2007, the updated <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/convertible-2nd-gen/">Convertible</a> would not be introduced until 2009. In addition to the naturally aspirated or turbocharged inline four engines, the second generation Mini also featured a diesel option. The sporty <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/cooper-s-2nd-gen/">Cooper S</a> continued to be available as an <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/cooper-s-2nd-gen/cooper-s-hardtop-2nd-gen/">S Hardtop</a> or <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/cooper-s-2nd-gen/cooper-s-convertible-2nd-gen/">S Convertible</a>, and towards the end of second generation production, the special edition <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/john-cooper-works-gp/">John Cooper Works GP</a> was offered. Previously, Mini had offered a John Cooper Works tuning package that was often installed by dealers, but starting in 2009, the John Cooper Works became its own factory built variant. The JCW was largely based on the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/cooper-s-2nd-gen/">Cooper S</a>, but it featured a range of improvements such as new exhaust, brakes, suspension, and differential. Mini offered the John Cooper Works in both hardop and convertible body styles, and the variant was offered until 2014.

The second generation of the Mini John Cooper Works GP was introduced for the 2013 model year. A high performance, special edition variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/">Second Generation Mini Cooper</a>, the John Cooper Works GP features aggressive bodywork as well as improvements to the engine, suspension, and brakes. Alongside the uprated 215hp 1.6L turbocharged engine, weight saving measures such as removing the rear seats aid in giving the Works GP greater performance. Only 2000 examples of the Mini John Cooper Works GP were built for worldwide sale in 2013, giving the car great desirability. The rare Works GP is not to be confused with the more common <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/modern-mini/2nd-gen/john-cooper-works/">Mini John Cooper Works</a>.
