At the end of 1986, Peugeot introduced a version of the 205 GTI with a larger 1.9L engine. The GTI 1.9 was equipped with a 126hp 1.9L inline four, making it capable of completing the 0-62mph sprint in 7.8sec and boasted a top speed of 127mph. Later models with catalytic converter produced slightly less power, with output rated at 120hp. With its longer stroke, the GTI 1.9L was oil cooled but had a similar fuel injection system to the GTI 1.6L. The 205 GTI 1.9L was equipped with all round disc brakes and 15" alloys, and was built until 1993.
