The Porsche 356 B Carrera was the ultimate, race-derived, high-performance variant of the Porsche 356 B generation, and was offered as Coupe or Cabriolet. In 1959, the 356 B Carrera was offered with the recently updated 1600 GS (105 HP) or 1600 GT (115 HP) engines. Later on, in 1960, Porsche updated the 1600 GT to 134 HP and halted the GS offering of the Carrera lineup until 1962, when the new Carrera 2 liter engines made their debut. These were offered in the new 356 B T6 bodies, featured a slightly lowered compression ratio and a reduction to 130 HP. In 1963 Porsche developed an even better option for the new Carrera 2 and went back to offering the two different options for the Carrera lineup: the GS (130 HP) and the GT (160 HP). These 1962-63 356 B Carrera's featured one of the most advanced technical updates made by Porsche: the annular disk-brake system.
