Porsche 911 Carrera - 996(1998 to 2004)

CMV $24,066

The Porsche 911 Carrera Type 996 introduced in model year 1998, overlapping with the last year Carrera 993's, represented two major changes for the venerable 911 lineage: a water-cooled flat-6 engine replaced the popular air-cooled engine used in the 911 for 34 years, and the body shell received its first major re-design. Changing to a water-cooled engine was controversial with Porsche traditionalists, who noted this as the end of the 'true' 911. Engine displacement was 3.4 L and power output was 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp) featuring a change to an "integrated dry sump" design and variable valve timing. The displacement was increased in 2002 to 3.6 L and power received an increase to 320 PS (235 kW; 315 hp). Approximately 85,150 Carrera 996's were produced for model years 1998 through 2004, with 46,315 being the coupé version (hardtops), and 38,835 being cabriolets (convertibles). With the discontinuation of the 996 series, it was replaced with the Carrera 997 for model year 2005.
