Porsche 924 GTR / GTP (1981 to 1981)

The ultimate development of the 924 in its race trim was the 924 Carrera GTR race car, which produced 375 hp (280 kW; 380 PS) from a highly modified version of the 2.0L I4 used in all 924s, and weighed just 930 kg (2,050 lb). This allowed for a 0–60 mph (97 km/h) time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).

In 1980, Porsche entered three 924 GTRs in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing an impressive 6th, 12th, and 13th overall. Porsche also developed a 924 GTR rally car, along with two additional GTR variants (the Miller and BF Goodrich cars). In total, 17 (some sources say 19) Carrera GTRs were built.

Building on this platform, Porsche created the 924 GTP, a further-evolved factory prototype developed specifically for endurance racing. The GTP featured extensive aerodynamic improvements, additional lightweight components, and a more advanced version of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This model represented the peak of 924 racing engineering prior to the introduction of the 944-based prototypes.
