Founded in 1852, Studebaker continued to make various automobiles until it closed production in 1966. Studebaker moved into the car industry with electric vehicles in 1902 and gasoline automobiles in 1904. In 1962 Studebaker rolled out the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/hawk-series/gran-turismo-hawk/">Gran Turismo Hawk</a> in an attempt to create a sleeker, flashier image. For the 1963 model year, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/">Avanti</a>. The elegantly sporty Avanti was capable of reaching speeds of 170 MPH when fitted with an optional supercharged engine. It was the fastest production car ever on offer in America at the time.&nbsp;

The Studebaker President was a series of cars that debuted in 1927. During its lifespan, the President represented the top offering from Studebaker, built as a full size car until 1942, and then for a brief period as a compact from 1955 until 1958. Studebaker produced the President in a range of body styles over the course of production, including sedan, roadster, and hardtop variants, with all cars being rear wheel drive. Four generations of Studebaker President were built: <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/1st-gen/">1st Gen (1927-1933)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/2nd-gen/">2nd Gen (1934-1940)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/3rd-gen/">3rd Gen (1941-1942)</a>, and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/4th-gen/">4th Gen (1955-1958)</a>.

This latest generation of President saw the model downsize, yet it still remained Studebaker&#39;s top offering. These new cars featured streamlined styling, and were available in two door sedan, four door sedan, and roadster body styles. A selection of inline eight engines were available for the rear wheel drive President, which saw its second generation produced until 1940, when it was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/3rd-gen/">Third Generation Studebaker President</a>.

The <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/">Studebaker President</a> was first introduced in 1927. The first generation President represented Studebaker&#39;s most luxurious and refined offering, and was designed to be the best car on the road. These new rear wheel drive cars were available in roadster or sedan body styles, and featured distinctive oval headlights beginning in 1931. Initially, a 5.8L inline six engine was used, but in 1928, a 5.1L inline eight was fitted. That engine lasted until 1931, when a large 5.6L inline eight was used. Production of the first generation President lasted until 1933, when it was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/2nd-gen/">Second Generation Studebaker President</a>.

Studebaker introduced their third generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/">President</a> in 1941. The third generation saw improvements all around the car, with updated styling, as well as a raft of new luxuries including a sliding roof, automatic starter, and even a hill start anti-rollback system. Only two body styles were offered, a roadster and sedan, which were only available with inline eight engines. This short lived generation ended production 1942 due to the outbreak of WW2. Studebaker would not use the President name again until 1955, when the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/4th-gen/">Fourth Generation President</a> debuted.

The fourth and final generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/">Studebaker President</a> was introduced for the 1955 model year. The President name had dormant since 1942, but this new generation revived the name and returned it to the top of Studebaker&#39;s model lineup. Over the course of its production, the fourh generation was offered in a variety of body styles including two door sedan, coupe, station wagon, four door sedan, and the most notable, the two door hardtop. The sleek hardtop body style, known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/4th-gen/speedster/">Speedster</a>, was only offered for 1955 model year, and is highly sought after by collectors. This V8-powered generation of President remained in production until 1958, when the model was discontinued.
