In January 1998, the 100 series Land Cruiser was introduced to replace the 8-year-old 80 series. According to Autotrader, "the 100 finally saw the change from mostly luxurious to a full-on luxury SUV". In the US, it dropped the 6-cylinder 4.5L 1FZ-FE in favor of a 4.7-liter V8, and it added a long list of upscale features that only grew as the years went on. Other markets continued to offer the 1FZ and diesel options as well. For model year 2008, the 100 Series was replaced by the 200 Series Toyota Land Cruiser.
