The Volvo 850 R was a high performance variant of the Volvo 850 that was introduced for the 1996 model year. The 850 R was the follow up to the Volvo 850 T-5R, and like its successor, it featured distinctive bodywork, as well as various mechanical upgrades. These cars were built in sedan and wagon body styles, and were powered by Volvo's B5234T4 engine. This powerplant was a turbocharged 2.5L inline five with an output of 240hp which was sent to the rear wheels via manual or automatic transmission options, although the manual wasn't available in North America. Volvo ended production of the 850 R in 1997, when the 850 was discontinued.
