Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916. Commonly known as BMW, the company began life as an airplane engine manufacturer that began building motorcycles in 1923. BMW eventually entered the automotive world in 1928, and has gone on to become one of the world's most recognized and respected automotive manufacturers. Legendary names such as 507, 3.0 CSL, 2002 Turbo, M1, and M3, are just a few in the company's history. The BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series are also regularly among the world's best in their respective categories. BMW is also well known for its 'M' Motorsport division, as well as the high end Alpina models.
