A true icon of German engineering: this 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is a well-preserved example of the legendary W113 series, better known as the “Pagode.” Rather than being over-restored, it has remained largely original, with a clean, well-kept appearance and documentation that goes back at least 25 years.
Repainted only once, with original details intact
This car was professionally repainted once, about 25 years ago in the Netherlands. What stands out immediately? The original weld seams and factory spot welds are still visible. That’s a rare find on a Pagode and a clear indication of a solid, well-maintained body that has always been treated with respect for its authenticity.
The color combination is spot on: classic Mercedes-Benz blue with a matching blue MB-Tex interior, set off by an ivory-colored steering wheel and gear shifter. The bodywork, chrome trim and paint are in very neat condition, and the interior is a real showpiece. Take a look at the photos on our website to get a true sense of how well this car has been preserved.
Under the hood sits the powerful and reliable 2.8-liter inline-six engine with mechanical fuel injection. Paired with the rare four-speed manual gearbox, it offers a wonderfully connected driving experience. Most Pagode models came with an automatic transmission, but purists seek out the manual version for its more engaging performance. The gearbox shifts smoothly and confidently, just as you would expect from a Mercedes of this caliber.
Recently serviced by a marque specialist
This 280 SL was recently given a comprehensive technical inspection and servicing by a well-regarded Dutch SL specialist, with invoices to back it all up. The maintenance history is extensive and carefully documented, going back more than 25 years. It’s increasingly rare to find a Pagode with this level of transparent, well-kept provenance.
The W113 was ahead of its time
The W113 was the first sports car to feature a safety cell, three-point seatbelts, and a collapsible steering column—innovations that are still relevant today. It marked the first time comfort, performance and safety were brought together in such a refined and elegant design, penned by Paul Bracq. It’s no surprise the Pagode became one of Mercedes-Benz’s greatest successes and remains incredibly popular to this day.
