Such a rare and elegant vintage BMW. BMW only produced 1692 BMW 1600 Convertibles, of which only very few are left. This car wears - in our opinion - the best color: 002 Colorado Orange. All convertibles were produced by the coachbuilder 'Baur' in Stuttgart. These cars are among the rarest BMW's around and are highly sought after.
This very car was produced on the 9th of October 1970 and was delivered to Autohaus Krah & Elders GmbH & Co. KG in Fulda, Germany on the 7th of April 1971. The car was factory delivered in this color Colorado Orange. Around 2017 we have bought this car from the last German owner near Nürnberg. In 2018 we have restored this car to it's former glory and sold it to a customer in Texas, USA. After 7 years and only 900 kilometer driven since restoration, the car is back available in Oldenzaal.
The car was completely restored between 2017 and 2018. A complete and all-out restoration. The body was stripped and the bodywork was replaced where neccesary. A complete repaint in the factory color was performed. A beautiful finish on the outside, engine-bay, trunk and undercarriage. Sharp body lines and great panelgaps, original front fenders. The car was assembled with lots and lots of new parts and the car makes an as new impression. Re-chromed front and rear bumper, new windshield. Partial new trim around the body, new trim on the sills and re-chromed taillight roundels. New, clear headlights, new emblems, new gaskets, new mirrors. All new parts, re-plated locks, nothing left forgotten. The body is very straight, showing excellent panelgaps and the paint finish is lovely. No usermarks.
The interior shows the correct Convertible seats. Everything has been reupholstered in beautiful black vinyl. It features a new set of carpets in the correct loop-style material. The dashboard is the correct 3-piece dashboard with Convertible-specific lock. Excellent doorpanels and the short center console with Convertible-only dome light.
The trunk was lovely restored with new wooden panels beautifully reupholstered in grey vinyl, a restored sparewheel, jack, tool and toolset. The frame of the convertible top has been replaced and looks as new. Also the tonneau cover has been replaced.
Technically it's all gone through and rebuilt. The car looks, feels and drives like a new 1600 Convertible. The matching numbers engine has been rebuilt and runs like new, sounds lovely and revs eagerly. Everything on and around the engine is new as well: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condensator, coil, coolant hoses, thermostat, waterpump, gaskets, fuel hoses, all filters and much more. It features a 123Ignition (electronic, maintainence free) and an electric fuel pump.
The front and rear axle have been removed for restoration, we're taken apart and have been powdercoated. After that assembled with all new bushings, hardware, tie-rods, wheelbearings, rebuilt brake calipers, set of new brake lines, new rotors, pads, hoses, new shock absorbers, top mounts, brake lines, brake cilinders, brake shoes and more. The car has Bilstein shocks and H&R springs wich make for a pleasant ride.
The gearbox has been checked and re-sealed and fitted with a new clutch, guibo, center driveshaft bearing, rubber mounts and fluid. The exhaust system is all new and stock. The fueltank was powdercoated and inside-coated. It sits on the correct 4,5x13" wheels that were repainted, have fresh tyres and the correct small chrome hubcaps.
The car was put together with love, precision and countless new parts. Factory fresh, no usermarks, just 900 kilometers since restoration.
