What’s special about this listing

Details

This 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia is powered by a 2.0 liter, air-cooled, flat-four cylinder engine that sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The beige-colored body is complemented by a plaid brown and green cloth upholstery. The small camper van features a kitchenette complete with a gas range and a sink, and a pop-up style roof that adds headroom and sleeping capacity. The lower rear bench folds out to form a bed, and the pop-up ceiling can be converted into a second loft-style bed. Additional features include electrical outlets, a heater, and three-piece louvered side windows that open, and brown privacy curtains. The van shows 68,092 miles, but the true mileage is unknown. The vehicle is located in California.

This VW Westfalia is portrayed well in the inspection and third-party photos. The vehicle is in usable condition; however, photos do show dents, dings, scratches, cracks in the paint, and surface rust around the vehicle. The fuel gauge is said to be inoperable, and the battery will likely need replacing. In addition, the van has cracked tail and headlight lenses, aged weather stripping that needs attention. Inside, the formica veneer is chipping, and the photos also reveal tears in the upholstery in several places. Mechanically the inspection found the van to run and drive, and the brakes were also in working order. Overall this VW could be enjoyed as is with some light recommissioning, or it would make a great candidate for total restoration. Included in the sale is a full-size spare tire with a cover.

This VW is being sold through a CLASSIC.COM Pro and is located in Truckee, California.

About the model

Volkswagen introduced the second generation of its Type 2 in 1967. Known as the T2, the second generation of Type 2 van featured a new and more angular front end, as well as a single front window. This single windscreen has given the T2 its nickname, the "Bay Window." While sporting updated styling, the T2 still carried many of the styling cues established in the first generation. The T2 featured many notable variants, including the Westfalia. Volkswagen used the name Westfalia to designate their camper models. Designed for camping and overnighting, the Westfalia featured modifications to the interior and exterior in order to create the outdoor-focused van. Built until 1979, the T2 was replaced by the T3 Type 3.
