This Avanti is one of only 200 produced in South Bend, IN for the ’84 model year, continuing the original and classic Studebaker design (whose production ended in Dec., 1963). Its composite body is finished in black, with black leather instrument panel/dashboard, door panels, headliner, and Recaro seats (with red piping). With its power windows, door locks & trunk release, AM/FM/cassette stereo, CD changer & power antenna, and body colored bumpers, this Avanti offered a more modern version of the original iconic design/
Done 2,600 miles ago: New A/C condenser, drier, compressor & wiring, with a re-cored radiator, so that the A/C blows cold and the engine never overheats in hot summer weather. The front end was rebuilt with all new suspension, kingpin and sway bar bushings, plus new Eaton Detroit front springs (1 in. lower for that “Avanti rake”), Gabriel adjustable shock absorbers and proper alignment. As a result, it tracks, steers and drives much better than before. It also has new American Racing Torq Thrust 15 X 6 wheels with new 3-bar Avanti logo spinners. The original 5 X 7 rectangular headlamps were backdated to 7 in. round using the correct buckets, bezels and adding Euro H4 lamps (all original parts included). The “hog troughs” are good, with the exception of a small area at the passenger side rear, which has been cleaned and treated with POR-15. A new (now 2 yrs. Old) battery and alternator have been added, as has an LED center-mounted third brake light and a new Avanti trunk script.
Included are the owner’s manual, factory build sheet, selected wiring diagrams, alignment and other specifications. Spares include new rear brake shoes & cylinders, filters, two Avanti hats and more. The car has a clear Michigan title.
Surprisingly, perhaps, virtually every part for this car is still readily available – not only the GM-sourced drivetrain and other items, but the Avanti-specific components, from Nostalgic Motors in Wixom, MI, who not only acquired all the parts when the South Bend plant closed, but also all the drawings and tooling, so that additional parts could be manufactured when needed. Additionally, other suppliers offer reproduction parts.
Avantis continue to have a strong following, and the Avanti Owners Association International publishes an excellent monthly magazine, organizes annual events, and is a great resource.
Life is short. Drive something different.
