This BMW is a project. It has approximately 320,000 miles, and is tired. I have owned it for about 10 years and put 80,000 miles on myself. It is time for me to save for another BMW. The body style is E30, four door, five speed manual, and AWD. This is one of the first examples of AWD cars. When I bought it, I had it painted from artic white to fjord blue metallic which is another OEM color last used in 1976. It is now parked and not running. I will list what minus and pluses I know. Please contact me with any questions.
Minuses:
On roller wheels; will need to be towed.
The clear coat has faded. It needs to be painted again.
The dash is cracked. It has a dash cover on it that has faded. Carpet dye would fix this.
The original leather seats are split. They need to be redone.
I expect it has a blown head gasket. It will not run.
It has numerous areas of rust. Only one is really bad, which is the driver's side floorboard. I have a replacement floor pan for it.
The front struts are slightly bent. I have replacements for them.
I expect most of the front suspension is in need of replacement. I have some parts.
The original odometer was replaced. It stopped working and I chose to replace it instead of repairing it.
The fuel sending units are broken. The gas gauge will not read correctly.
You have to turn the gas pump handle upside down to have automatic locking gas filling.
Pluses:
The AWD system was working when parked.
The clutch was still good.
The engine was responsive. It felt like it had more power than it did.
The sunroof does work and does not leak.
It has an Alpine stereo with bluetooth in it. It has a microphone for calls.
I put an OEM spoiler on it from a 318i. It looks factory.
I replaced the head gasket previously. The head was machined at that time. It is likely it will only need inspection and no further machining.
I replaced the worn camshaft with a mild one from Ireland Engineering when the head gasket was done.
I replaced the spark plugs and wires.
The radiator was replaced with a bigger, aluminum one
The clutch fan was replaced with an electric fan when the radiator was replaced.
I had a couple of the door bottoms redone from rust,
I have several parts that I am willing to sell separately.
This is a car I had planned on keeping forever. It would make a great track day car. It is a good candidate for an engine swap, perhaps to a newer BMW engine. With some work, this will be a great car again.
