This 1993 Ford RS Cosworth was purchased and imported to the USA from Spain in 2021. The car was located in the North of Spain and had been restored by a gentleman that does this with cars and sells them. He had taken the car all the way down giving the car a fresh coat of paint, upgraded performance parts, brakes, suspension, and cleaning the vehicles underside to near flawless detail. After a brief storage in the South of Spain, it was shipped over to the USA where it has resided in Arizona.
The 1993 Cosworth also known as a Cossie is one of the most iconic cars from the 90s. Made even more famous by Ken Block's Gymkhana videos, this car was produced for homologation of the WRC rally cars that dominated that era. The first 3000 produced featured a bigger Garrett T35 turbocharger, P8 ECU, and even had water/methanol sprayer lines run through it. The late 1992 to 1994 cars were the ones to get. The 95-98 "small turbo" cars were not as mod friendly. Coming stock, the 2.0L inline-four cylinder Turbocharged engine delivers power to the ground from its all wheel drive system. These cars came stock with around 224 horsepower to the crank.
Upon receiving the car in 2021, we dove into it to make sure it ran as good as possible. Working with Cosworth specialists in Europe like Burton Power, Graham Goode, Auto Dynamix, Airtec, we upgraded the vehicle to what is a common Stage 3 setup. This includes a new ECU Chip (with launch control), Gray Injectors, 3bar map sensor, and upgraded fuel pump. We also custom fabricated a full catless turboback exhaust system that is titanium from the downpipe back. Refreshing the engine with new ARP Headstuds, Cometic Head Gasket, and new valve seals has brought this YB20 engine to ultimate performance. These engines commonly run upwards of 25-28psi of boost on higher octane. To help with efficiency we installed an aluminum radiator and a high flow Airtec Intercooler with slim fans paired with a Forge Motorsport blow off valve and silicone hoses. As that factory intercooler is small and the stock plastic diverter valve is weak these were a must change. The engine bay features custom carbon fiber parts from a company in Slovenia who specializes in Cossie components.
Since the stock Amal Valve that controls boost is old technology and we wanted to be able to set high and low boost pressures, we installed a Greddy Profec B Electronic boost controller. With the lower 91 octane that we receive here in Arizona, we added an AEM Water/Meth system to help spray into the intercooler pipe before the throttle body which helps cool the combustion chamber and reduce chance of detonation. This is mounted in the cars trunk with a custom fabricated mount near the spare wheel. The car also features a larger alternator and oil catch can. The 5speed gearbox allows you to go through the gears with a short shifter while still looking OEM with the stock shift knob and boot. A beefier clutch was installed but is very streetable as its a full disk.
The car was restored with Bilstein struts but due to the design of the factory rear suspension, adjustments were limited. So we installed a rally grade 6-degree rear beam by OMS Products in Belgium and a set of GAZ Gold Coilovers that feature adjustable ride height and dampening. The front axle has a set of AP Racing big brakes with slotted rotors and the rear has standard calipers. The car has a set of 18″ Compomotive Motorsport wheels with the iconic OZ Rally livery and a set of Toyo Tires in 225/40/18.
Inside the car is a full cloth interior with factory sport Recaro seats in excellent condition. The hexagon material that came factory is seen throughout to the rear seats. The headliner, door cards, and dash are all in perfect condition with no tears or cracks. The stock clock on the dash commonly fails so we added a DTM digital monitor that tells you important info in real time such as boost, afr, rpm, engine temp and more. We also added a new Pioneer stereo with Rockford speakers to get some good music going. The steering wheel has been reconditioned to feature fresh alcantara with a white stripe and the blue Ford stitching. The stock indiglo gauges can fade out so we have acquired a new set so they are bright and straight from the 90s.
Further exterior details include a carbon fiber front lip with splitter and "hockey sticks", Morette headlights and the iconic whale tail spoiler. The front clip has full Xpel PPF. The front bumper is not the original and made of fiberglass. It unfortunately has a on the drivers side from coming off of a trailer.
Note that the cluster was changed out as the original had issues. The KM are part of the cluster and not stored anywhere else. They are also only 5 digits. We estimate the car to have about 95,000 miles on it with about 5,000 on the overhauled engine. Overall the car is in excellent condition and mechanical operation.
