Maserati Mystique
There is a certain mystique that emanates from Maseratis that’ll leave you staring. Perhaps it’s the exotic looks or racing pedigree. Maybe the fact that you just don’t see that many of them makes any sighting a thrill. The lines on the Maserati Spyder from the early aughts certainly play a role here; man, it’s a pretty car. When that Spyder is of the triple black variety and sporting a rare 6-speed manual, as with today’s example, that mystique is impossible to miss.
History
Maserati’s long history goes back to the early 1900s Italy, with four brothers bent on racing. Over the coming years they would achieve all manner of success, eventually turning their attention to building road cars that are a “feast for the senses” as the automaker says. In the early 1990s, the House of the Trident joined up with longtime rival Ferrari. Amongst other things, this tie-up would lead to the slinky Maserati 3200 GT sporting a Ferrari engine under the hood.

Sometimes referred to as the 4200, today’s 2002 Maserati Spyder GT was the follow up act to the 3200 lineup. Also available as a Coupe, the new Tipo M138 series was penned by the famed Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who boasts a staggering list of automotive designs. The Spyder was nearly 9-inches shorter than the coupe, to make it a true roadster, and featured a naturally aspirated V8 built by Ferrari alongside their 360 Modena power plant. It would mark the return of Maserati to North America after an 11-year hiatus and was an instant hit. Forbes magazine selected it as the Best GT for 2001.
Black Beauty
Elegant and muscular are terms that come to mind looking over the sweeping front end and clipped tail of this Spyder GT. Finished in black with a black three-layer power-operated soft top, it is a striking car with a finish that presents well and benefits from a lifetime of garage storage and never being driven in the winter. A wide array of photos in the gallery details the condition from every angle along with a video walk-around.

The soft top has a plastic rear window and stows under a body-color hard cover when lowered, as shown in the gallery video, with minor fading and staining noted. Exterior highlights include a chromed front grille surround and Trident, integrated fog lamps, Design Giugiaro fender badges and quad exhaust outlets. Hazing on the headlights along with front end paint blemishes are detailed in the gallery, and per the owner there is no rust present. The passenger side was repainted in 2012 after being keyed in a parking lot.

Under current ownership, the original staggered-width 18” chrome wheels were powder coated and painted black. Minor curb rash on the rear passenger-side wheel is documented in the gallery. Featuring Trident center caps, they are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires all around. Front tires are sized 235/40 with 2022 date codes and rears are 265/35 with 2022 codes. They frame a Brembo braking system featuring cross-drilled rotors, sized 13” up front and 12” out back, that are clamped by four-piston calipers finished in red with white Maserati script.
