Lot 4991-PHX: 2003 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

Hey! The 2003 SVT Lightning is a super cool performance truck, but there are definitely some known issues worth being aware of. Here’s what I found:

The Big One – Spark Plug Ejection The 5.4L 2-valve Triton engine in the Lightning is notorious for spark plugs that can blow right out of the cylinder head! This happens because Ford only gave these plugs 3-4 threads in the aluminum heads to start with. When you’re putting out 380hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, that stress can cause plugs to literally rocket out of the head. Definitely check if any plugs have been Heli-Coiled or replaced properly.

Eaton M112 Supercharger The supercharger uses a specific supercharger oil that needs periodic changes. If it’s neglected, bearings can fail. They’re pretty robust overall, but keeping up on that fluid change is key. The intercooler can also get cruddy and heat soak if not maintained.

4R100 Transmission This 4-speed auto can handle the Lightning’s power better than in some other Ford trucks, but under heavy use or high-mileage, valve body issues and torque converter problems can crop up.

Air Conditioning & Cooling The A/C on these can be finicky, and given the heat in Mesa where this one’s located—you’ll want to know that works! Also, the cooling system overall works hard with that supercharged engine.

Alternator Issues The stock alternator can struggle to keep up, especially with electrical accessories.

The Good News? The specific Lightning you’re looking at has only 61K miles on it, which is super low for these. Since it has the K&N intake and 2024 Nitto tires, it looks like someone’s been caring for it. At $44,995, this is a pretty nice example!
