This is one of the best debates in the modern Ferrari world — and the market has basically already voted, but the “right” answer really depends on what you value.

Pricing Reality Check

Here’s what’s surprising: the 458 Spider currently commands higher prices than the 488 Spider. Based on Classic.com data:

Model Market Range (Clean Examples) Your 488 Spider
458 Spider (2011-2015) $300,000–$420,000
488 Spider (2016-2019) ~$235,000–$265,000 $309,900

That 2018 488 Spider you’re looking at is priced above the comparable range of $234k–$264k for similar mileage Spiders. Meanwhile, low-mile 458 Spiders are asking $396k–$422k. The 458 has become a collector sweetheart as the last naturally aspirated mid-engine Ferrari V8.

Performance & Character

458 Spider 488 Spider
Engine 4.5L naturally aspirated V8 3.9L twin-turbo V8
Power 562 hp @ 9,000 RPM 661 hp @ 8,000 RPM
Torque 398 lb-ft @ 6,000 RPM 561 lb-ft @ 3,000 RPM
0-60 mph ~3.4 seconds ~3.0 seconds
Top speed 199 mph 203 mph

The 488 is objectively faster — that extra 100 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque launch you harder, and the turbocharged mid-range makes passing effortless. But the 458’s 9,000 RPM redline and screaming naturally aspirated soundtrack is widely considered the last “true” Ferrari experience. The 488’s turbos muffle the sound and soften the throttle response, even if they improve everyday usability.

My Recommendation

Buy the 458 Spider if: You care about the driving experience, the 9k RPM shriek, resale/collectibility, and owning the last of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated mid-engine V8s. It’s the purist’s choice, and it’s appreciating.

Buy the 488 Spider (maybe not this one) if: You want the absolute performance edge, easier daily drivability with that low-end torque, and modern cabin tech. However, at $309k I’d shop around — comparable 488 Spiders with similar miles have sold in the $240k–$260k range: https://classic.com/m/ferrari/488/spider/

You can find 458 Spiders here: https://classic.com/m/ferrari/458/spider/

Get the 458 if you can stretch to it. The 488 is great — but the 458 is special. What matters more to you: pure driving emotion or raw performance numbers?
