Austin Motor Company

The Austin Motor Company, better known as Austin, was an English automotive manufacturer that was established in 1905. Austin was founded by Herbert Austin, and was one of the first English car makers. The company first started creating more luxurious models, yet one of Austin&#39;s most famous models was the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/seven/">Seven</a>, a simple, inexpensive economy car. In 1952, Austin merged with <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/morris/">Morris</a> to create the British Motor Corporation, although both the Austin and Morris names continued to be used for similar products. Together, these companies would sell the legendary <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mini/classic-mini/">Mini</a> before the model became an independent brand. Austin was also part of the legendary <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin-healey/">Austin-Healey</a> collaboration that produced some of England&#39;s most notable sports cars. The Austin brand would go through various owners, including British Leyland and the Rover Group, before being discontinued in 1987.

The Austin A40 was a family of cars first introduced in 1947. The A40 designation was used across a wide range of cars as Austin would label their cars with the letter A, then the cars approximate horsepower. Over the course of production, Austin used the A40 name across various body styles and mechanical evolutions. In addition to the A40 label, Austin used names of English counties to differentiate their models. The most well known variants were the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/devon/">A40 Devon</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/sports/">A40 Sports</a>, and the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/somerset/">A40 Somerset</a>. The Austin A40 Somerset was a series of cars introduced in 1952. As part of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/">Austin A40</a> family, the A40 Somerset replaced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/devon/">A40 Devon</a>. These midsize cars were built in two body styles, the most common being the four door saloon, while a much rarer two door convertible was also offered. The Somerset was powered by a 1.2L inline four engine that sent drive through a 4 speed manual tranmission to the rear wheels. Production of the Austin A40 Somerset lasted until 1954, when it was replaced by the A40 Cambridge.

The Austin A40 Sports was the sports car variant of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/austin/a40/">Austin A40</a> family. Introduced in 1950, the A40 Sports was offered as a two door convertible that was powered by a 1.2L inline six engine. While similar to the unit used in other A40 variants, the Sports&#39; engine was fitted with twin carburetors that raised total output to 46hp. This engine&#39;s power was sent to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual transmission. Production of the Austin A40 Sports ended in 1953 with a total of 4,011 examples built.
