The BMW 2002 Base Model was introduced in 1968 as the standard offering for the BMW 2002. The 2002 was built in a range of body styles that consisted of Coupe, Cabriolet, Top Cabriolet (semi-convertible), and Touring (hatchback). While the hardtop versions were built by BMW, the coachbuilder Baur created the open top versions. These cars were powered by BMW's M05 engine, which was a 2.0L inline four that had an output of 99hp that drove the rear wheels. Three transmission options were available during the course of production, a standard 4 speed manual, as well as a 3 speed automatic or 5 speed manual. The BMW 2002 was a highly successful model that was offered until 1976, when it was replaced by the BMW 3 Series.
