Introduced in 1956, the BMW 503 is a 2+2 grand tourer. Influenced by the success of the early Mercedes SL, BMW decided to pursue the sports car market. Released alongside the BMW 507, the 503 was available as a coupe or cabriolet, and was fitted with BMW's 3.2L OHV V8 engine. The 503 did not achieve great sales numbers, with only 413 examples built, of which 139 were cabriolets. The 503 was produced until 1959.
