Edsel

Edsel was an American automotive brand that was founded in 1957. <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/ford/">Ford</a> created Edsel in order to add to its range of brands, and to take from the market share of its main competitors, General Motors and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/chrysler/">Chrysler</a>. Named after Edsel Ford, this new company first introduced its models for the 1958 model year. Seven models were created: <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/ranger/">Ranger</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/pacer/">Pacer</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/bermuda/">Bermuda</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/citation/">Citation</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/villager/">Villager</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/roundup/">Roundup</a>, and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/corsair/">Corsair</a>. Commercially, Edsel faired very poorly after its debut, with sales far from what was expected. This lack of sales meant only three model survived past 1958, before all remaining Edsel production ended in 1960, and the brand was dissolved.

The Edsel Ranger was a series of full-size cars that was introduced for the 1958 model year. The Ranger was Edsel&#39;s entry level model, and over the course of production, was offered in hardtop, sedan, and convertible body styles. This family of rear wheel drive cars were fitted as standard with a 3.7L inline six engine, but 4.8L and 5.9L V8 units were optional. Both manual and automatic transmissions were available for the Edsel Ranger, which was in production until 1960.

The Edsel Bermuda was a family of full-size station wagons introduced for the 1958 model year. The Bermuda was Edsel&#39;s top station wagon model and featured signature simulated wood panelling. This series of cars was only available in a four door wagon body style which was offered in six or nine passenger configurations. The Bermuda was powered by a 303hp 5.9L V8 engine tthat sent power through manual or automatic transmission options to the rear wheels. As Edsel experienced poor sales after its introduction, the Bermuda was only offered for the 1958 model year.

The Citation was offered in two door hardtop, four door hardtop, and two door convertible body styles, and was Edsel&#39;s flagship model. This family of rear wheel drive cars was powered by a 6.7L V8 engine paired to a three speed manual transmission. Due to Edsel&#39;s commercial failure, the Citation was only offered for the 1958 model year before being discontinued with a total of 9,299 examples made.

The Edsel Corsair was a family of cars that debut for the 1958 model year. The Corsair was positioned under Edsel&#39;s flagship <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/edsel/citation/">Citation</a>, and was initially offered in two and four door hardtop body styles, although for 1959, convertible, coupe, and sedan body styles were available. Due to Edsel&#39;s commercial failure, Ford shifted Corsair production on less expensive <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/ford/">Ford</a> platforms, as the Corsair had been based on a <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/mercury/">Mercury</a> platform for 1958. This change in platform also changed the Corsair&#39;s engine, as 1958 models were fitted with a 6.7L V8 engine, but 1959s were powered by a 5.4L V8 engine. Production of the Edsel Corsair lasted until 1959, when the model was discontinued.
