The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL is a roadster which was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1989 through 2001. The R129 replaced the R107 in 1989 and was in its turn replaced by the R230 SL-Class in 2002 for the 2003 model year. The R129 was produced as a two-door, two-seat roadster with an automated (electro-hydraulic), collapsible textile roof, with a shell-like, color-matched, tonneau cover. All R129s came standard with an aluminum detachable hardtop that was fitted by folding the canvas roof down and manually attaching the hardtop. The R129 generation of SL-Class featured a range of variants that included the 300SL, 300SL-24, 500SL, and 600SL. For the 1994 model year after Mercedes changed their naming conventions during 1993 across all models, moving the model letters (SL) before the engine displacement, variants resulted in the SL280, SL320, SL500, SL600,  Alongside standard production variants, a variety of AMG-tuned versions were also created, featuring the 500SL AMG 6.0, SL55, SL60, SL70, SL72, and SL73. The R129 was eventually replaced by the Mercedes-Benz R230 SL-Class.
