The first generation of Oldsmobile 88 was introduced in 1949. The first generation 88 was powered by Oldsmobile's 5.0L Rocket V8 engine, and was available in hardtop, coupe, sedan, and station wagon body styles. During the production of the first generation, Oldsmobile introduced the higher end 'Super' variant, as well as naming the base model the Deluxe. Production continued until 1953 when it was replaced by the Second Generation Oldsmobile 88.
