Pierce-Arrow was an American automotive manufacturer that traced its roots to 1865. Originally established as a manufacturer of household goods, Heinz, Pierce, and Munschauer was renamed The George N. Pierce Company in 1872. Under this new name, the company began to produce bicycles before eventualy venturing into automotive production in 1901 with the Pierce Motorette. In 1903, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/arrow/">Arrow</a>, a successful model that encouraged Pierce to create the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/great-arrow/">Great Arrow</a>, a luxury car that established that brand as a highly reputable automaker. In 1909, the Pierce family left the company and it was renamed Pierce-Arrow and introduced models such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/model-48/">Model 48</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/model-66/">Model 66</a>. The company went on to establish themselves as one of America&#39;s premiere luxury carmakers, with cars such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/model-33/">Model 33</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/model-36/">Model 36</a> leading the way. Pierce-Arrow was purchased by <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/">Studebaker</a> in 1928, who helped fund the development of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/eight/">Pierce-Arrow Eight</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/twelve/">Pierce-Arrow Twelve</a>, which are two of the company&#39;s best known models. One of Pierce-Arrow&#39;s most notable cars was the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/silver-arrow/">Silver Arrow</a>, a concept car created in 1933 that caused a stir with its futuristic styling. The first line of Pierce-Arrow Eight included variants such as the Model 125, Model 133, and Model 143. Any time Pierce-Arrow introduced a significant update to the Eight, they created a new model, such as the Model 41 and Model 54, which were later examples of the Eight. In 1933, Pierce-Arrow introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/silver-arrow/">Silver Arrow</a>, which was a concept car originally intended for production, but was far too expensive to succeed during the Great Depression. Although the concept car never saw production, Pierce-Arrow decided to use the Silver Arrow name for their Eight and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/pierce-arrow/twelve/">Twelve</a> range. These production &quot;Silver Arrows&quot; featured little in common with the concept car, instead, they used the name in order to aid marketing for their existing models. The Pierce-Arrow Twelve was a family of luxury cars that were introduced in 1932. The Twelve was a high end range of cars offered in two series, which were differentiated by wheelbase length and engine displacement. The namesake V12 engine powering the Twelve was initially available as a 6.5L or 7.0L unit. The 6.5L version was used for the 137 inch or 142 inch wheelbase (launched as the Model 53), and the 7.0L version was used for the range topping 147 inch wheelbase (launched as the Model 52). The smaller engine proved underpowered, so for 1933, the 7.0L became the lower displacement unit while a larger 7.6L was introduced as the top engine. This lasted until 1934, when Pierce-Arrow only offered the 7.6L unit. These engines sent their power to the rear wheels via a 3 speed manual transmission. Created to compete with top end American luxury cars such as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/cadillac/v-16/">Cadillac V-16</a> and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/packard/twin-six/">Packard Twin Six</a>, the Pierce-Arrow Twelve was available in a wide range of open and closed body styles.
