The Pontiac Fiero became the premier platform for supercar replicas because of its innovative steel spaceframe that allowed builders to easily unbolt the non-structural body panels and replace them with fiberglass shells of Ferraris or Lamborghinis without compromising the car's integrity. Its mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout provided exotic car proportions (a short hood and long rear deck) that front-engine cars could never achieve. Combined with its affordability on the used market and a chassis that was easy to stretch for longer wheelbases, the Fiero offered a low-cost, mechanically simple platform perfect to make a fairly realistic italian exotic car replica.
