Studebaker moved into the car industry with electric vehicles in 1902 and gasoline automobiles in 1904. In 1962 Studebaker rolled out the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/hawk-series/gran-turismo-hawk/">Gran Turismo Hawk</a> in an attempt to create a sleeker, flashier image. For the 1963 model year, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/">Avanti</a>. The elegantly sporty Avanti was capable of reaching speeds of 170 MPH when fitted with an optional supercharged engine. It was the fastest production car ever on offer in America at the time.&nbsp;

The Studebaker Avanti was a series of personal luxury cars introduced for the 1963 model year. The Avanti was Studebaker&#39;s top model during its production, and was only available in a two door coupe body style. This new line of cars were created to combine luxury and performance, and were offered with three engine options. The <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/r1/">R1</a> was the standard 4.7L V8 engine, with an optional supercharged version known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/r2/">R2</a> also available. A rare variant with a larger 5.0L supercharged V8 was also built, and is known as the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/r3/">R3</a>. Both manual and automatic transmissions were offered. Production of the Studebaker Avanti lasted until 1963, although sales continued into 1964. After the Studebaker factory closed, a group of former Studebaker dealers who bought the Avanti&#39;s rights, plant, and tooling in order to keep producing what was virtually the same car under the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/avanti-ii/">Avanti II</a> brand.

Studebaker Avanti R1

The Avanti R1 was the base offering for the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/">Studebaker Avanti</a>. The R1 was named after its &#39;R1&#39; engine, which was a naturally aspirated 4.7L V8 unit. These rear wheel drive cars were available with manual or automatic transmissions, and featured front disc brakes. Studebaker built the Avanti R1 until 1964, when the company sold their factory. Production of a largely similar model under the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/avanti-ii/">Avanti II</a> name began the following year after the factory and rights to the Avanti were purchased by former Studebaker dealers.
