Studebaker moved into the car industry with electric vehicles in 1902 and gasoline automobiles in 1904. In 1962 Studebaker rolled out the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/hawk-series/gran-turismo-hawk/">Gran Turismo Hawk</a> in an attempt to create a sleeker, flashier image. For the 1963 model year, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/avanti/">Avanti</a>. The elegantly sporty Avanti was capable of reaching speeds of 170 MPH when fitted with an optional supercharged engine. It was the fastest production car ever on offer in America at the time.&nbsp;

The Studebaker Commander was a family of cars that was first introduced in 1927. The Commander originally succeeded the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/special-six/">Studebaker Special Six</a>, and was an intermediate full-size model for the majority of its production. Studebaker used the Commander name for a large&nbsp;part of its history, building the model in six generations: <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/1st-gen/">1st Gen (1927-1935)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/2nd-gen/">2nd Gen (1937-1941)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/3rd-gen/">3rd Gen (1947-1952)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/4th-gen/">4th Gen (1953-1956)</a>, <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/5th-gen/">5th Gen (1957-1958)</a>, and <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/6th-gen/">6th Gen (1964-1966)</a>.

The sixth and final generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/">Studebaker Commander</a> was introduced for the 1964 model year. This generation saw the Commander name used for the lower-intermediate trim level on the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/lark/">Studebaker Lark</a>. These rear wheel drive cars were powered by a 3.2L or 3.8L inline six engine, with an optional 4.6L V8 also offered. Production of the Studebaker Commander ended in 1966, when the final Studebaker plant in Canada closed.

The first generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/">Studebaker Commander</a> was introduced in 1927. The Commander succeeded the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/special-six/">Studebaker Special Six</a>, and was the company&#39;s intermediate full-size model. These rear wheel drive cars were initially powered by a selection of inline six engines, but starting in 1929, an inline eight option became available. Body styles offered included sedan, coupe, and roadster. Production of the first generation Commander lasted until 1935, when Studebaker dropped the model. In 1937, Studebaker renamed their <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/dictator/">Dictator</a> model the Commander due to the global climate before WW2, effectively launching the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/2nd-gen/">Second Generation Studebaker Commander</a>.

The second generation of <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/">Studebaker Commander</a> was introduced in 1937. This generation saw the reintroduction of the Commander name, after having been discontinued for the 1936 model year. The Commander was Studebaker&#39;s entry-level model until 1939, when the company introduced the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/champion/">Champion</a>, thus making the Commander a mid-range offering, which it would be for the large part of remaining production. The second generation Commander was available in two door sedan, four door sedan, and coupe body styles, and was in production until 1941, when Studebaker suspended production of the Commander due to WW2. After the war, Studebaker would introduce the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/3rd-gen/">Third Generation Commander</a> for the 1947 model year.

After WW2, Studebaker dropped its premium <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/president/">President</a> model, thus making the Commander the company&#39;s top offering. The third generation Commander was available in two door sedan, business coupe, convertible, and a top of the line four door sedan variant known as the Land Cruiser. Initially, this generation was only available with two inline six engine options, but starting in 1951, Studebaker introduced a V8 engine option. Production of the third generation Commander lasted until 1952, when it was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/studebaker/commander/4th-gen/">Fourth Generation Studebaker Commander</a>.
