The Land Cruiser 80 series was unveiled in October 1989 at the Tokyo Motor Show and launched in early 1990 to replace the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/60-series/fj62/">FJ62</a> in America, and other variants of the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/60-series/">60 series</a> around the world. It had swing-out back doors, which were replaced by a tailgate and hatch in 1994. In America and other markets, it started off sporting Toyota&#39;s 3F engine (<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/80-series/fj80/">FJ80</a>). For diesel markets Toyota offered&nbsp;a 4.2-liter turbo and non-turbo diesel options (<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/80-series/hxj8081/">HDJ80, HZJ80&nbsp;or 81</a>). In 1992, a&nbsp;more&nbsp;advanced gas powered 1FZ-FE, 24-valve, 4.5 L six-cylinder&nbsp;engine was introduced (<a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/80-series/fzj80/">FZJ80</a>). 1997 was the final year of production in Japan and for sales in the United States, where Toyota offered two final variants: the Collectors Edition and the 40th Anniversary Edition. In 1998 the 80 series was replaced by the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/100-series/">100 series Land Cruiser</a>, although it would continue in production in Venezuela, where it was retired in&nbsp;2008. The Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80 was the successor to the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/80-series/fj80/">FJ80</a> in the <a href="https://www.classic.com/m/toyota/land-cruiser/80-series/">80 series</a>&nbsp;gas-powered lineup. While body and features remained largely similar, the FZJ80 was powered by Toyota&#39;s new 4.5L, 24 valve,&nbsp;1FZ-FE engine, capable of producing 190 to 240 horsepower depending on its configuration. Production of the FZJ80 ended in Japan in 1997. For that year,&nbsp;two special edition variants were introduced: the Collectors Edition, a package available in most colors, and the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, of which 4,744 were made in Antique Sage Pearl or Emerald Green colors.
