Time Capsule 2002
The best 2002 we've seen in ages. A non-restored 2002 of this quality is amazing and near-impossible to find. A 1972 2002 with round taillights with just 62.000 kilometers, not restored, all original and wearing original paint. The car was delivered through BMW of Italy and first registered in November of 1972. Through an Italian connection who knows our appetite for quality 2002's the car found it's way to Oldenzaal.
An amazing story: Just 61.000 kilometers/38.372 miles. The car was stored dry in the last years and came out in 2025. We've completely gone-through this car technically. Body, paint, interior, trunk, engine-bay - it's all original and untouched.
It's a '72 BMW 2002 that was ordered in 085 Chamonix over a Marine vinyl interior. The body has never been welded, its wearing all original body-panels and was never repainted (apart from trunklid and left-rear quarter panel). We've measured the paint thickness (see pictures) and all shows original and in great condition. The body is straight with perfect shutlines. The doorjambs are clean and the door bottoms shows excellent metal and paint. Not repaired, an excellent survivor. Such cars hardly exist anymore - 02's in original condition.
The interior is a great place to be. Everything is from 1972 and how it was meant. To sum things up; a perfectly nice and white headliner. Clean original carpets in 'salt & pepper' loop material. Nice and straight doorpanels in blue, no holes, no damage, no loudspeakers. The 2-piece dashboard in mint condition, without cracks or holes. The original 3-spoke steering wheel, original centerconsole that never saw a radio. The original shiftknob with great texture and original shifter boot. Fantastic. The switchgear feels tight and the doors shut as on the first day.
The engine bay is just as original and kept up to date. All original paint and decals. The engine is the original, matching numbers 2,0L unit. After the years of sitting unused we have opted to rebuild the engine; Have the cylinderhead rebuilt, new bearings, chain, pistonrings and gaskets. The engine runs like a champ goes eager through the revs. We've done a major service, listed below. The original 4-speed gearbox shifts excellent, very tight and very silent. There is hardly any play on the shifter.
The trunk shows the original spare with new tire, jack, tool. Furthermore all original sheetmetal wooden covers with grey vinyl. The factory 6x13" Cromodora wheels have been repainted and fitted with new tyres.
We have done a very extensive service to make it drive and function as it should:
Recent service consists of:
• Engine Rebuild
• New Distributor cap, rotor, points, plugs, wires
• Cleaned & Rebuilt Carburator
• New Waterpump, Thermostat, Set of coolant hoses, clamps and coolant
• Rebuilt Brake calipers + rear brake cylinders
• Brake hoses Front + Rear + Brake Fluid
• Rebuilt Starter Motor
• Voltage regulator
• New Guibo, Center Driveshaft Bearings, Transmission Mount
• Transmission oil & Differential Oil
• Suspension bushings
• Center tie-rod
• Battery
• Alignment
