The Alfa Romeo Spider is one of the most recognized sports cars ever to come out of Italy, both timeless in design and rich in heritage. The Pinninfarina designed bodywork has stayed fairly true to the original concept and lasted from 1966 all the way through 1994. The Spider outlasted all the competition as the sole survivor of the 2-seat roadster class of automobiles that were so popular in the 60s and 70s. Not many cars can ever match the Alfa for style, passion, and history that it is so loved for by its admirers throughout the world. Alfa modernized the Spider's design in 1983 to the "Aerodynamica" body and in 1986 and there were 3 models to choose from, the entry level Graduate, the Veloce, and the new range topper Quadrifoglio. These models all featured aerodynamic mirrors, a black rear deckled spoiler with integrated 3rd stop lamp, new instrument cluster and center console, with better quality interior materials. The Quadrifoglio model had painted aero side skirts, front air dam, and a rear valance. The engine was the much proven all-aluminum, 2.0L DOHC 4-cylinder using BOSCH L-Jetronic fuel injection making it both easier to maintain as well as having better power delivery than the earlier Spica mechanical injection systems. The cars all had 4-wheel disk brakes, 5-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential.
This 1987 Spider was built Septempber of 1986 in the Quadrifoglio trim level and sold to its first owner by Cochran & Celli Inc of Oakland, CA. The exterior is finished in Argento Metallic over Grey leather trim, red stitching, red carpets, and black canvas soft top that was standard to all Quadrifoglio models. The car has its color matched, Pininfarina designed, removable hard top, black vinyl tonneau boot with red stitching, and 15-inch phone dial alloy wheels. The standard options include; reclining sport bucket seats, power windows, rear fog lamps, lighted passenger vanity mirror, Alfa branded Clarion am/fm radio cassette with 4 speakers, digital clock, leather wrapped steering wheel, intermittent wipers, power mirrors, and full red carpeting in the trunk area. The 1st owner had the car for 37 years and was an engineer at Boeing and a long time NW Alfa Romeo club member who pampered this Spider from the day he purchased it. A documented maintenance log from 1987 to current accompanies the car. The car was sold through us to its 2nd owner in May of 2024 whom we have exchanged many cars with over the years. Today the car has 128,000 miles and shows extremely well both inside and out. The car retains all its original glass, emblems, interior, and hard top. The paint is in good condition with a few chips, light scratches, and nicks consistent with the age. Some paintwork has been done over the years to various panels. The dash is free of cracks, the carpets are in good shape with no holes, fading, or heavy soiling. The leather seats are still soft, supple, and aside from a little driver bolster wear are in remarkable condition, something of a rare find in these cars as most had the interiors exposed to harsh sunlight and heat for long periods of time. The original Clarion Alfa Romeo radio and cassette player function well, and looks very cool in a period 80's tech fashion. During the last year the Spider has had 4 new Bridgestone tires installed with suspension alignment, water pump replaced, new battery, upgraded H4 headlamps fitted, Centerline non-cat performance exhaust (sounds incredible!) leather Nardi steering wheel, new clutch and master cylinders, new sway bar bushings, oil change, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, and new Alfa logo floor mats. The previous owner removed the AC compressor and related components to save weight and have less drain on the engine as he never used it here in the NW climate (all parts are boxed up and can be put back in). The hard top is in great condition and has its cover and all brackets. The car is complete with its tool kit, owner manual, shop manual, 3 sets of keys, tonneau boot, box of spare parts, car cover, and even an original front end black vinyl bra!
The Quadrifoglio is a joy to drive on the road and brings back motoring pleasure in the form of classic top down driving, great Italian looks, and racing pedigree that cannot be replaced. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a darling of a sports car with good upside in the future and like a fine wine, will only continue to grow even more beautiful as time passes. These cars represent the end of an era for the stylish, 2 seater, Pininfarina designed Italian roadsters of an all analog driving experience.
