Of the two body styles built for the BMW E30 M3, the rarest was the convertible. These open top performance cars were introduced in 1988, and were available in much smaller numbers than its Coupe sibling. While all convertible variants were fitted with BMW's S14 inline four engine, for the first two years of production, two versions of the engine were offered depending on the market. The S14 fitted with a catalytic converter produced 192hp, while the one without generated 200hp. In 1991, a more powerful 215hp version of the S14 was used across all markets. Production of the E30 M3 convertible lasted until 1991, with a total of 786 examples built.
