The BMW 320is as a special variant of the E30 3 Series that was created for the Italian and Portuguese markets. Due to high import taxes from these countries for cars with engines larger than 2.0L, BMW created the 320is. This performance focused variant was released as a four door sedan, with a coupe being added in 1988, and featured a smaller version of the M3's S14 engine. Known as the S14B20, this inline four engine generated 189hp, which drove the rear wheels via a 5 speed manual transmission. A short lived variant, the 320is saw just 3,748 examples built before the model was discontinued in 1991.
