Introduced for the 1980 model year, the L7 was a US-market specific variant of the E23 BMW 7 Series. The L7 was the top and most luxurious offering for the E23 7 Series, sharing its drivetrain and chassis with the 735i. This series of cars featured generous use of leather throughout the cabin, as well as a moonroof and various standard options. Power for the L7 came from BMW's 3.4L M90 inline six engine, that generated 215hp driving the rear wheels through a four speed automatic transmission. The L7 was the last variant of the E23 7 Series to be produced, with sales ending in 1987. BMW would reintroduce the L7 name as part of the E38 7 Series in 1997, as the E38 BMW L7.
