Over the course of its history, Chrysler has used the Newport name various times for a different range of uses. The first use of the Newport name was the Newport Phaeton, a rare open top show car. The Newport name would go on to be used to designate two door hardtops available on the Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler Windsor starting in 1950. It was not until 1961 that the Newport name was applied to an independent entry-level model, which was built in five generations: 1st Gen (1961-1964), 2nd Gen (1965-1968), 3rd Gen (1969-1973), 4th Gen (1974-1978), and 5th Gen (1979-1981).
