The 230.4's name features the ".4" in order to designate the four cylinders of its engine, as for 1974 Mercedes also introduced the 230.6, which was part of the W114, and was powered by a six cylinder engine. The 230.4 was offered from the factory in a four door sedan body style, although coachbuilt station wagons were built by a variety of coachbuilders. These cars were powered by Mercedes' M115 V23 engine, which was a 2.3L inline four that generated 110hp, and drove the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission. Production of the W115 Mercedes-Benz 230.4 ended in 1976, with a total of 87,609 examples built.
