The Mercedes-Benz W115 240D 3.0 was was a variant of the W115 Sedan produced between 1974 and 1976 and is best known for introducing the first five-cylinder diesel engine in a passenger car. Powered by the legendary OM617 which was a 3.0L diesel inline five, producing 79hp and 127 lb ft of torque that was sent to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission (Although only the automatic transmission was offered on North American cars), it earned a reputation for exceptional durability and longevity, often exceeding very high mileages. As part of the “Stroke-8” family, it became an icon of Mercedes-Benz reliability and a benchmark for diesel sedans worldwide.The 300D model series would continue life in the next generation Mercedes-Benz E as the W123 Mercedes-Benz 300D.
