The Mercedes-Benz 280SE was a variant of the W116 S-Class that was introduced for the 1973 model year. The 280 SE was built on the standard W116 platform, and was intially fitted with Mercedes' M110.983 engine. This 2.8L inline six was fitted with Bosch's D-Jetronic fuel injection and generated 182hp (142hp in North America due to emissions restrictions). For the 1976 model year, Mercedes updated their engines with Bosch's K-Jetronic fuel injection, which slightly decreased performance, but improved reliability. The 2.8L inline six fitted with K-Jetronic fuel injection is known as the M110.985. Both engines sent power to the rear wheels via manual or automatic transmission options. Production of the W116 280SE lasted until 1980, with over 150,000 examples built. The 280SE model series would continue life in the next generation S-Class as the W126 Mercedes-Benz 280SE.
