In 1949, Saab, which had previously produced planes, entered the automotive market. The first model was called the 92 (Ninety-Two) and was offered exclusively as a two door coupe. The 92 was fitted with a 764cc inline two engine that powered the front wheels. Saab also produced a variant known as the 92B. Production of the 92 ended in 1956 when the model was replaced by the Saab 93.
