The second generation of the BMW 2 Series saw the model split into two distinct offerings, the G42, which was built in a coupe body style, and the F44, which was offered as a four door sedan known as the Gran Coupe. While both are marketed under the 2 Series name, the G42 and F44 are mechanically unrelated. The F44, which is contained in this market, is available as a front or all wheel drive sedan, with a range of turbocharged inline 3 and inline 4 engines. Both gasoline and diesel powerplants are offered, with the most notable variant being the M235i.
