Based on the Matador model produced by Tempo in Hamburg-Harburg and after Hanomag took over Tempo in 1965 and Hanomag and Henschel, two of the commercial vehicles producers for the Rheinstahl company merged, in 1970 Daimler-Benz offered this mid-size body style commercial van as part of their lineup. The Harburg Transporter was powered by fuel or diesel front wheel drive variants and under the L 206 D, L 207, L 306 D and L 307 model series. Coachbuilders offered the Harburg Transporter model as Mini buses, panel vans, single, double and triple cab platforms and RVs. Sales never reached the numbers of their competitor´s models such as VW Transporter or the Ford Transit so production under the Hanomag-Henschel brand ended in 1975 and for the Mercedes-Benz brand for the 1977 model year. The Harburg Transporter was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz T 1 "Bremer Transporter".
