The MG D-Type was introduced in 1931 as a convertible two-door four-seater vehicle. It used the 847cc engine sourced from the MG M-Type paired to the chassis from the MG C-Type. The 27hp engine was paired to a three-speed non-synchromesh gearbox that sent power to the rear wheels. Production of the D-Type continued until 1932 when it was succeeded by the J-Type.
